Adding a New Food

Food Description
Enter the description of the food. This could include the name of the product, the brand, etc. The description can be up to 100 characters long.

Food Group
Select the most relevant food group. If you are not satisfied with any of the food groups you can leave this field unspecified.

Serving Description
Enter the description of the most common serving of this food (optional field).

Serving Size
Enter the size of the most common serving and select whether it is in grams or milliliters (optional field).

Amounts Per
Select whether the nutrient amounts for this food are given for 100 g, 100 ml, or for a serving. Note, that if you select the serving option you have to specify the serving details which are otherwise optional. Also, please note that it is important to select whether the item is solid (g), or liquid (ml). For liquids, 100 g are not equal to 100 ml.

Nutrients
Enter the amount of each nutrient. If you don't have the amounts for all the nutrients enter as many as you have. As a rule of thumb, enter at least the Calories, the total fat, the total carbohydrate, and the protein. Be careful to enter the amounts using the correct unit. The units are displayed next to the input fields.

Notes

1. In the US, vitamins and minerals are given as a percentage of their recommended daily value in most labels. These daily values are:
Vitamin A: 5000 IU
Vitamin C: 60 mg
Calcium: 1000 mg
Iron: 18 mg
You can switch between units (mg, IU), and percentages ("%") using any of the drop-down boxes next to the input box of a vitamin or mineral. Please be aware that the percentage option is strictly for entering the nutrient amounts from US food labels.

2. In the UK the amount of sodium is given in grams (g) in food labels (1g = 1000mg). You can switch between grams (g) and milligrams (mg) using the relevant drop-down box next to the Sodium input box.
